The Fall Catch-up!

Man it’s been a while since I’ve sat down and written here. I’ve keep up with everything over the past season and a half now. So I’ll highlight my top 10 with some stats from the past season then I’ll comment on this current season. Summer season was pretty weak in my own opinion compared to the spring and winter seasons this year. I ended up with two spring continues in my final top 10 list for summer. Had a hard time filling the bottom third of the list with shows that had “weight” to them. Even based on the Mal ratings the season was the weakest so far. Link for the data. (Fixed the data error on spring numbers, thx for pointing that out dear reader) Lets jump into the Top 10 ūüôā

#10 Yama no Susume 2

Yama no Susume 2nd Season
Yama no Susume is the longer short series that follows up on the first short. All about mountain climbing and friendship. It’s nice to watch the first one but it’s not really needed if you didn’t want too. Each 11 minute episode follows a group of girls as they climb different mountains and overcome different challenges. Heartwarming and family friendly.

#9 Ao Haru Ride

Ao Haru RideIs change okay? This is the main theme that comes to mind for me when I think of this romance. Ao Haru Ride as it’s moments as the main pair reconnect after not seeing each other seen three years ago when the romance started. Sadly I didn’t connect really to the other characters but that was me. Ending will want you to read the manga to finish the story. (Manga ends soon*)

#8 Zankyou no Terror

Zankyou no TerrorShow about terrorist and mind games.Great overall show that made me think of death note at times. Loved the soundtrack, it’s a must check out if anything. Series starts off to an awesome start but somewhere in the middle it loses its way before getting back on track. I’d say it’s because of a “side-character” that comes out of the woods. Good plot and soundtrack are the highlights.

#7 Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance

Seirei Tsukai no Blade DanceBlade Dance was surprisingly enjoyable for me and something I looked forward to every week. A Harem that doesn’t forget that it has a plot or story line to continue is very enjoyable. Blade Dance does have fan service and does get off track at times but for the ¬†most part it remembers to continue down the road by the end of the episode. Fights are well done and are comparable to Fairy tale or one piece. I’d say come take a look into this mystery box.

#6 Baby Steps

Baby StepsBaby Steps is easily my favorite sports manga I’ve read and very different compared to most sports stories out there. Most start with the main characters already powered up in some way but don’t know it. Baby steps starts with a pure rookie in every way and if he a super power then it must be that he is a hard worker and that’s it. Since the show does start with a pure rookie, the show can feel a little slow at times since you have to take baby steps to become a pro. ūüôā You don’t see it much in the first season but there is a romance in the background of the show which is nice for a sports show/manga. (Second Season in Spring 15′)

#5 Space Dandy 2

Space‚ėÜDandy 2nd SeasonDandy back for more deaths and boobies in his second season! More great stories and entertaining adventures from the trio. We even get the answers to why Dandy dies and comes back to life every episode by the end of the series. If you liked the first series or like space adventures then I’d check this out.

#4 Nobunaga Concerto

Nobunaga ConcertoWe had a good number of Nobunaga shows this year overall and I’d say this is the number Nobunaga show period. It’s really good and the plot is so simple that it just works. Time-traveling kid gets sent back in time and takes Nobunaga Oda place, that’s the plot. This was the hidden gem of the season in my eyes. The show now has a live action drama as well and I’d say watch both if you have the time. I almost put this in my top 3 but only 10 episodes was the deal breaker with the current #3.

#3 Barakamon

BarakamonBarakamon is about a writer that goes to an island to get over his writers block and be able to create a great piece of work. Ends up meeting a lot of very different people and kids that help him along the way. Show was more funny than I thought it was going to be but it’s not a bad thing since I enjoyed the funny and serious moments of the series. Heartwarming and Family safe series.

#2 Aldnoah Zero

Aldnoah.ZeroSometimes you don’t need an awesome overpowered mech to be awesome. You just need to out smart your enemy with your mind and man does Aldnoah Zero showcase just that. One of the few shows that would play perfectly as a movie, just link up the episodes and enjoy the ride. Best soundtrack of the season, even beats Zankyou no Terror for me. Plot and some really twists and the end that I didn’t see coming and look forward to the second season that has been green-lighted.

#1 Haikyuu!!

Haikyuu!!My favorite of summer was the continuing of the spring’s Haikyuu. It’s the Kuroko no Basket of Volleyball. Super powered teammates and main duo that make you think they could do anything. Sadly I really enjoy watching larger than life characters kick some ass. Waiting for a second season badly.

This fall season really has to halves for me. One half I really like and that is about 15ish shows. The other 20-25 shows I really don’t care for but haven’t had the power in me to drop them yet even though we in the 7th week now. Overall about on par with this winter season in my eyes with good one-cour shows. Already thinking about what I’m going to put on my top 10 list for the year and it’s not going to be easy but looking forward to it. The hidden gem of this season to me is Shirobako. Anime show about the process of making anime, gives me the feel of bakuman.

Spring vs Winter Ratings

Winter Season Average % 7.14%
Winter Season Median % -4.96%
Spring Season Average 12.66%
Spring Season Median -5.33%

Before I start too much I’ll link my data for anyone who wants to check numbers and ect. At face value its easy to see the winter season didn’t have as many high(bad) end shows that drove the numbers up on the averages. So focusing on the median numbers more it would seem like the spring was a stronger season compared to the winter season. Lets look at the same data but taking out the outliers.

Spring Average w/o Outliers -10.41%
Spring Median w/o Outliers -10.99%
Winter Average w/o Outliers -11.50%
Winter Median w/o Outliers -6.05%

Averages’ only have a difference of about 1% so you could say the seasons’ had the same weight or strength. The spring did have an about 5% lead in the median. In both cases it shows that on average that we(viewers/raters) on MAL undervalue shows in the early weeks. Spring with a lower median would think it shows that we had a better shows than we thought in the beginning of the season. Could also be from having less shows in the pool because high amount of outliers in the spring season compared to the winter season. Thinking for this summer season I may compare season averages and medians based on the 3rd week vs the first week to see if that helps on outliers or keeping the season numbers closer to 0%. Cause you would hope that a show was just as good in the beginning as compared to the end. That a series didn’t magically get awesome in the 6th or 9th episode of the series. With that thought in mind some of the problems could be that I’m using the MAL weighted ratings. ¬†Shows would be undervalued in general in the first week or two because a good number of viewers may not rate till the 3rd episode comes out. So empty numbers hurting the weighted rating on MAL till more of the empty numbers add a score. Not sure though, I’ll have to look into that at some point.

In the end I’d say that the winter season shows surprised us more than the spring shows did. Below is the list of the biggest movers(surprises) in the spring then winter season. Move based on % from first week aired and not MAL rating numbers or the weighted score number out of ten.

Ping Pong the Animation
No Game No Life
Sidonia no Kishi
Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou
Haikyuu!!
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii
Nagi no Asukara
Kill La Kill
Hoozuki no Reitetsu

I’ll be continuing to track the airing shows and will have more stats posts in the future. Looking forward to comparing the year as a whole down the line. I’ll look at just shorts and sequels at the end of the year, waiting for the observations to build up. ūüôā

Blackbullet

Spring 2014 Top 10

Spring was a much easier season to watch in my eyes. Winter had most of its talent in just a few shows compared to this spring where there is a lot of pretty good shows. Luckily or maybe unluckily I based my top 10 off of the series end time and not the beginning so no baby steps or Haikyuu here.

#10 Black Bullet

Black Bullet is an action baseBlack Bulletd show about using super power girls to fight the monsters called “Gastrea”. The show¬†isn’t the best by any means but its a fun ride overall. The story wasn’t the best but worked for the plot setting of the anime. What holds the show back was that this show was only 12 episodes long and not 24 like a lot of other shows this season. As such the pacing is too fast for the series to show you great fun action and character¬†development. Good number of the character get no background on or¬†development throughout the show. Luckily the main duo pair get just enough to keep the story together.

#9 Isshuukan Friends

Could you be friendsIsshuukan Friends. with someone who forgot you every week? That’s the plot of Week Long Friends, Hase¬†is a boy who tries to be friends with Fujimiya ¬†who loses her memories every week on Sunday night.Went into this show thinking it be a huge tearjerker with good development. I was only mostly right, the show isn’t as tear-jerking as you would think. The best thing the show does is how it shows male friendship overall. Hase and Inoue have one of the most realistic friendship I’ve seen in an anime.

#8 Gokukoku no Brynhildr

Gokukoku no Brynhildr

Superpower girls and one lucky boy get all tied up together as they fight an evil company that is making these poor girls as experiments. Brynhildr is what I’d call a dark harem (harem with a dark setting/theme). The harem girls are the stars of the show and really make the show what it is. The story at times is weak and doesn’t fill all the holes at the end but lets you guess to what happens. Overall Brynhildr is an enjoyable fantasy show that will surprise you.

#7 Mushishi Zoku Shou

Mushishi Zoku Shou

Mushishi Zoku Shou is the second season to Mushishi and continues in the same wonderful style as the first. Mushishi is an episodic format anime that tales a story each episode. They can make you happy or bitter at core ideas it shows in the episodes. If you never have seen Mushishi before you could pick right up here and be okay without seeing the first series. The first episode does a good job of telling the viewers what are Mushishi and the role they fill in the world.

Great show to relax and enjoy in 20 minutes at a time.

#6 Selector Infected

Selector Infected WIXOSSSelector was my dark horse of the season and very happy to know it’s getting a second season. After watching Madoka Magic this week, I think Selector is a lot like it in ways it focuses on character growth. Selector is a high roller coaster with an easy ride up but has a big fall and many twists on the way down. Recommend you check out my past post on this series for information.

#5 Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii

Soredemo Sekai wa UtsukushiiSoredemo is a solid romance about a girl who can call on the rain and marries the sun king. Classic opposites attract and make each other even better. Any fan of romance should check this one out as it has wonderful pacing. Only problem I had with the series is that the same song is used to call down the rain every time.

#4 Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

Bokura wa Minna KawaisouBokura wa Minna is the best comedy in my eyes from this spring and even has a great romance in the background of all the laughs. Story is very simple as it’s about a boy’s life living in this¬†Kawai Complex as he goes to high school. Best part of the show are the voice actors and the jokes are timed very well.

#3 Love Live 2

Love Live! School Idol Project 2nd SeasonOne of my favorites in the idol genre. Love Live comes back for its second season and builds off its first season wonderfully. This time around the girls get one last shot at Love Live before the 3rd years leave. If you liked the first season then you will be happy that the second is better in terms of music in my eyes and the girls really feel like a family by the end.

Never forget Nico-Ni!

#2 Sidonia no Kishi

Sidonia no KishiSidonia was the biggest surprise to me of the whole season for me. Never would have thought I’d fall in love with a CGI anime like this. Sidonia setting is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi anime much like Battlestar Galactica where man is on the run from some type of non-human enemy. Sidonia had a very rough start in my eyes as it was hard to get into the story and the CGI at the same time. After a few episodes though I was hooked onto the story and even the characters. Sidonia may hold the record for making me so mad at a character I even had to pause the episode for a bit. ¬†The best thing about Sidonia is its soundtrack/background music as many of the action scenes you can really feel like you’re in the cockpit of the mech. Very enjoyable series and look forward to the second season.

#1 No Game No Life

No Game No LifeNGNL is an adventure anime that follows a Brother & Sister as they try to save humanity in the game world. The main duo go about winning in the game world through the use of different games since no one can use force or power to take over the world. The games used in the series are overall simple and very easy to understand making it easy to enjoy the show. NGNL came off like it was made for anime with almost no pacing problems and never forgot its story plot to background stories. This is the show that was the highlight of the spring season and shouldn’t be the one you pass over.

Top Spring 14′ Openings/Endings

Spring coming to a close soon and I’m ready for the new summer series. Before that I want to show off some of my favorite openings and endings of the spring season.

Spring Top Openings!

#5. Haikyuu my be my favorite sport anime for this spring. Wonderful fast paced sport that is animated very well.

#4. Bokura wa minna kawaisou opening shows off the series well. Love the watergun scene near the end of the opening, makes me smile every time.

#3. No Game No Life easily wins best series for spring and of course its opening would be in my favorites. ūüôā

#2. Selector Infected will surprise you during its course. The opening shows more of the positive side of the show compared to the ending. I’ve listened to this song a lot since I’ve bought myself a copy of it.

#1. Fairy Tail has my favorite opening this season even if I’m not really happy with the art style they switched too. Opening may be the best one fairy tail has ever had and lines up perfectly with the feel I got when I was reading the manga.

Spring Top Endings!

#5. Captain Earth holds 5th mostly because I couldn’t find a video of the love live 2 ending. The Captain Earth ending is very pretty though.

#4. Good ending with lots of energy, flows nicely with the show. ūüôā

#3. Baby Steps is my favorite sport manga that I’ve ever read so I’ve been loving the show so far. ¬†Even the ending song is called Baby Steps hehe.

#2. Bokura wa minna kawaisou ending is better than the opening in my eyes. Maybe since its more focused on leaving you with a happy image.

#1. Even though I really disliked the show overall for some reason, Ping Pong had the best ending of the season.

Some underrated series from this season you shouldn’t miss!

Well the Nisekoi recap never happened since I mostly forgot about it around my school exams and travels afterwards. Now Nisekoi is over and I’m six episodes behide. Hopefully I can finish it up before the summer season starts in two weeks but more likely not. I may have gotten behide on that show but as impossible as it may sound, I’m caught up on all the 40ish other shows of the spring season. If you been following this spring then you should know all about the top 5 favorites for most people.

I’m going to quickly cover some of the over looked series of the season in my eyes. Most of the series I’m going to cover would fall into the 10-15 range if you were listing this spring season in my opinion.

Selector2

I’ll start with the two series that have been green-lighted for a second season in the fall. Selector Infected WIXOSS is a series about a card game which doesn’t do anything with the cards at all. Its focus is on the card players called Selectors and the effect the game has on them and the people around them. Quick plot of the show is that girls play this card game to make their wishes come true but if they lose three times then they lose something in equal value to the wish that would make the wish impossible.

Selector1

I want to call the show a slice of horror but that wouldn’t be 100% accurate. First half of Selector is more slice of life with bits of dark themes. Show really starts to shine till episode 8 which opened the doors to the darkness of the show and made it much more interesting. ¬†If you passed over the show in the beginning of the season thinking it was going to be a card game focus anime then I’d say take another look as the details of the game stay in the shadows as the characters stay in the light. (Plus it’s getting a second season so better watching now than last-minute before the fall season)

Chaika1

Hitsugi no Chaika is the second show that I know is getting another season in the fall. The quick plot to Chaika is that the Princess Chaika running around the countryside with two ex-soldiers looking for her fathers magic body parts so she can bury him in one piece. The show doesn’t do anything new but its a solid action/adventure series. The best thing the show has for it is the how well the lead trio get along and deal with the all the shit that happens in the show. Good series if you’re looking for a slice of action with an interesting plot.

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou is a slice of life that I didn’t think I was going to like as much as I am. It’s as pure slice of life as you can think of. Plot is purely Usa(the boy) moves into a boarding house for high school and this is his life since then. Hmm how to put why I like this series so much. Mostly it seems to just come off so natural that its enjoyable. The humor is light and simple that as made me laugh without me even knowing sometimes.

Bokura1

It does have a love story as one of the main focuses but it’s very pure and simple. For once its only one guy and one girl without other characters butting in or any love triangles which is nice to see. I do agree that the art looks a lot like 5cm per second if you have ever seen it. Overall this isn’t a slide of life to overlook.

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii is a shojo beat adaptation that isn’t for everyone honestly. One its shojo beat and it seems most people don’t like pure romance vs pure action. Second is that the plot is about a teenage girl marrying a young¬†boy which is more accepted as okay vs the opposite.

Soredemo1

Anyways what won me over on the series is that both of the main characters act older than the script age. The sun king that is like 11-13ish ¬†acts more like someone in late teens or early twenties and the Rain princess acts more in the mid twenties than an eighteen year old. As such the way they solve encounters make them feel more natural and in a real relationship compared to something fake or cheap. ¬†If you’re looking for a romance that wastes no time and has deep messages throughout the show then check out Soredemo Sekai.

Sidonia no Kishi is a show that I almost dropped in week 2. Mostly because I wasn’t feeling the CGI and the main character yet. I’m glad I stayed around though, the CGI does look very good in a good number of places in the show. Naming the mechas, environment, and lighting. Still have some problems with the characters but its more of a setting and plot issue over the CGI. Plot to Sidonia is simple, last of the human race running from aliens and main character is here to save the day. The story does a good job of seeming very realistic and not very gundam. People die in war and it isn’t pretty, no one is perfect and unkillable.

Sidonia1

The best and worst of Sidonia is the characters. There are many cliche or just plot movers in the show. But at the same time some of those same characters are being out emotions that a good number of series never do. Like there is one character that has made me so angry and mad I really did wish death onto the character. Which I think the last time I felt that was watching linebarrels of iron about a year ago. So I recommend you check out Sidonia no Kishi.

That’s all from me for now. Look forward to more posts in the near future.

Darbee Update

Hello good readers and strangers passing by! I’m still around and watching way too much anime for my own good. Haven’t been able to post much lately as the month of April is a very busy time for students like me. For some reason teachers don’t assign work the first two and half months of a year and just push it all back till April. So my free time I’ve been using to post was filled with projects and such. No worries though, only two more weeks till the end and I’ll be back to a normal posting habits. I should have a large recap post on Nisekoi this weekend for like the last four episodes. In other news I’m getting my ass kicked in FAL atm, really hoping my score based team can make up big points later in the season compared to the hype based teams. *crosses fingers*

tl:dr Been busy with school, should end in two weeks then posts like crazy.

Winter 2014’s Top 10

Man I’ve been busy trying to keep up with all the shows that have started this spring. Think I’m all caught up now right before the next week starts all over again. Now for my top 10 of the winter season! If you don’t see a big hitter here I may have not watched it or it just didn’t make my cut for me personally. *Count series by the season they end unless they are an ongoing series like One Piece.*
10. Wake Up, Girls!

I can’t say I’ve watched many Idol series before Wake Up, Girls so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The prequel movie is pretty much a must to watch to get the introductions of the girls and the main reasons behide way they join the group. The show doesn’t seem to have any pacing issues and I enjoyed watching the girls grow up a little throughout the show. Problems the group runs into are very real, almost to the point that I think the writer is making run of the industry. ¬†Good drama and character¬†development make Wake Up Girls a good ride.

9. D-Frag!

D-Frag! is easily the best comedy of the winter. Can’t say there’s is really a plot to D-Frag! as most slide of life comedies don’t have one. Have to say I thought of Pokemon in a lot of the episodes with each of the girls having a “type” as their weapon in combat. D-Frag! is best watched little at a time to really let everything soak in. Recommend you check out D-Frag! if you into a comedy with some very over the top girls that make delinquents look weak.¬†

8. Golden Time

Golden Time a romance that has many real issues in it under all the drama of the show. The writer of¬†Toradora! really sends you on a roller coaster ride in Golden Time. There are some pacing problems in the middle of the show but nothing super bad. If you liked Toradora or are a fan of romance series then I say you should watch golden time and get your own opinion¬†of the show. ūüôā

7. Space Dandy

Space Dandy is a great random adventure every episode. Dandy is a space hunter searching for aliens of value so he can go to Boobies! With QT and Meow at his side you know you going to have fun no matter what happens. Hell you could watch Space Dandy backwards after the first episode and be 100% okay since there isn’t an overarching story. Almost free like doing that now I’m thinking about it. You will have fun watching this so go now!

*You should be watching it and not reading*

6. Log Horizon

Log Horizon will be compared to SAO no matter what I say. So here is the best way to sum it up: SAO is action based and Log Horizon is mind based. You watch everything unfold in SAO but Log Horizon makes you think about the world they are in and what they will do next. LH is dialogue-heavy compared to SAO but so wonderful. Most of the fights are won based on the tactics used and we don’t really see fighting up close but more through an general’s eyes.¬†¬†If Log Horizon has any problems is that the show has too many characters with too few episodes to build them all up. With a second season coming, should see that problem go way.

5. Gundam Build Fighters

Gundam Build Fighters is 100% a kids show made to make money off of. The plot is simple: kid makes toy gundams and fights in a big tournament to win. At the end of the day you don’t need a big fancy story if the fights are enjoyable in gundam. Great to see a lot of the older models of gundams in the show, really takes you back. Fun show with good animation.

4. Buddy Complex

Starts off a little rough on the pacing but quickly fixed. Sunrise brings us a mecha that doesn’t throw any punches but steady wins you over. ¬†Good writing and character development with a level-headed main character really won me over. Even sets up for future romance ties for the second season, which more mechas should have I feel. Buddy Complex won’t bore you with details or the same fight animations each battle but slowly draw you in till you hooked.

3. Kuroko no Basket 2

One of the best sports anime period in my eyes. Easily say I like Kuroko over Slam Dunk. If you never watched Kuroko before it’s about a high school basketball team trying to be the best in Japan. Sport plots all about the same for the most part. One of the things I really like about Kuroko is it never wasted time, it almost moves to quickly from game to game. Everyone should watch at least one sport anime and this is the best year for them it seems.

2. Noragami

Noragami has the best pacing in a show that I’ve watched in a while. You would think that a show just about a god and his problems after running into a girl would be all over the place but it isn’t. Great action-shounen anime that looks awesome and sounds wonderful to the ears.¬†

Noragami has the whole package for a masterpiece in only 12 episodes. When you have time, check it out.

1. Nagi no Asukara

Nagi no Asukara is a drama that will keep you on your toes and surprise you. Nagi gets #1 in my books for its wonderful character development in the cast. They really grow up over the course of the series and you will have your favorite fanships. If you can connect to the characters then you will like Nagi no Asukara as it is a character-driven drama, all the problems are because of the actions of the characters and not the world they live in.

Helps that the show is eye candy too, there are lots of scenes that could be wallpapers. ūüôā

Weekly Ratings – Week 13 Final

Winter 2014 is over and now we can hopefully look forward to warm weather! Sadly where I live it’s still in the 40s and but not for much longer! I’m ready for green grass and flowers over the snow and ice. Remember next week I’ll have a new format for the ratings, old format will still be around but won’t be talking about the MAL taste of anime much.

Only shows not done yet are two cour or Saki because it got pushed back by the Japan elections. Everything else is done and seems to stabilize a bit in the rankings. Did have four big jumps in the rankings though. Hoozuki, Buddy Complex, and Pupipo! all jumped at least 500 placements. Z/X Ignition also jumped a good amount but the show is more in the middle of the rankings on MAL so it’s a little easier to move about.¬†On the Fall two cours we have Nagi no Asukara making the top 100 list with Kill la Kill. Even Gundam Build Fighters jumping into the top 500 list.

Even have some extra graphs for us to look at for the final. Both graphs show the same type of data, it’s the growth of a series over the course of the 13 week season. Positive number would mean that the series got “worst” in the eyes of MAL raters compared to the first week of the season. ¬†This is only one of many ways you can analysis the data. I also took the season’s average and median % change. ¬†Average was 7.14% for the season and -4.96% on the Median. Median would show that more shows had a “better” rating by week 13 of the season. Average is positive because¬†I kept outliers in my data which are pulling the data positive or worst in the case of the anime show.

Do know that normally the winter season is known to be the weakest of the year for anime series but since this is my first time doing this I have nothing to compare too. I want to say that having a negative median is a good sign for the season and anime in general. Shows that¬†series¬†more than not are better than we first thought aka First Impressions. Hopefully after some seasons I’ll have more results to compare to each other and learn a little more about the general anime watchers.

*Edit* Okay the outliers thing was bugging me so I went back in the data and found the outliers for the season to take them out. Outliers for us would be series that did way better or worst than we(MAL raters) thought. Low outliers are: Nagi no Asukara, Kill la Kill, and Hoozuki no Reitetsu. High outliers are: Hamatora the Animation, Wizard Barristers, Sakura Trick, Chuunibyou demo, and Mahou Sensou. You could in a way say that the high outliers were over valued shows and the low outliers were undervalued. After outliers are out the average is -11.50% and the median of -6.05%. ¬†Values much closer together so I’m happy. Maybe next season we’ll have even a lower % but not going to be easy with 4 shows in the top 100 and it’s not even a week into the season yet. Please remember that the analysis still has errors in it. Some would be that I don’t have the data for the first cour of the fall continues and I didn’t have every single show that aired this winter in my data list. If I did have that data we could see different numbers but I’m hoping that with taking out the outliers should have helped for a lot of the errors. You can see the data Here.

Top OP & ED of Winter 2014

With the winter season now over, it’s time to look back at the best Openings and Endings from the winter in my opinion. Lets hop too it then!

Honorable Mentions

Wizard Barristers¬†OP “JUSTITIA” by Lia”

The show may not have been the best of the season but I did enjoy the opening. Does a good job showing off what the show was about.

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei ED “Tomadoi‚ÜíRecipe¬†by Mikakuning!”

Just a really fun song once you understand all the characters. Pretty funny at the same time.

Top Endings of Winter Season

#3 Witch Craft Works ED “”divine intervention” by fh√°na”

Have to say that this ending is what got me through some of the episodes of WCW.

#2 Mahou Sensou “Born to be” by nano

Ending to Mahou Sensou was it’s shining star for the series. Way better than the show and almost my favorite ending of the season.

#1 Noragami “Heart Realize” by Tia

Easily the best ending for me this season. Really brought out the emotions for myself. Noragami really out did itself this season in the quality of work it showed in the opening and ending.

Top Openings of Winter Season

#3 Space Dandy “Viva Namida” by Yasuyuki Okamura

Never know what your about to see in every episode of space dandy and the opener really got you pumped for whatever was coming. I don’t think I ever skipped the opening on a space dandy episode.

#2¬†Noragami¬†“Goya no Machiawase” by Hello Sleepwalkers

At first I didn’t really care for the opening of Noragami, but it grew on me much like the show did.

#1 Nagi no Asukara OP2 “ebb and flow” by Ray

The second opening for Nagi no Asukara really caught the change in pace for the show right. Even the small changes in the opener over the course of the last 12 episodes was nice. My favorite for the season, looking forward to next season.

Spring Preview Part 2 of 2.

Hitsugi no Chaika

Date: April 10th

Studio: Bones (Noragami)

Genre: Action/ Adventure

MAL / PV

Episodes: 12

Staff: Masui, Soichi, Majima, Junji, Anzai, Chika

Toru Acura is a 20-year-old retired soldier meandering through life now that the war has ended. He encounters Chaika Trabant, a 14-year-old sorceress carrying a coffin, and follows her in hopes of finding meaning to his life again. The two travel with Toru’s adopted sister, Akari, the employed member of the group and thus Toru’s source of income.

Hmm girl and her coffin gun, even has magic too. Seems a little silly to me, but the story makes me think of the plot of Samurai Champloo with the group of travelers. After taking a moment to look into the director I see that he was behide the storyboards of Samurai Champloo, which is surprising. Don’t have any big hopes for the series, crew doesn’t have that much experience in main roles but I don’t see it as a big problem since Chaika doesn’t look like she’s going to be talking much.

Expectation Level: 5/10

Fuuun Ishin Dai Shogun

Date: April 10th

Studio: J.C. Staff

Genres: Action, Mecha

MAL / PV

Episodes: TBA

In the late Edo period, Japan had experienced an unprecedented crisis by Kurofune (Black Ships), the ships from foreign countries. But a giant robot called Onigami, which has existed since ancient time, dispelled the Kurofune ships and the exclusion of foreigners was accomplished. The story begins in Japan where Meiji restoration in 1868 didn’t happen.¬†

Any show that has a tagline that is ‚ÄúI can be the greatest man in the world, because I am a virgin!‚ÄĚ is a¬†show worth checking out. Secret harem in the making and should be a good little hearted mecha. Glad¬†we have two mecha series that will balance out the dark side we‚Äôll be getting with the other mechas in¬†the spring.

Expectation Level: 7/10

Escha & Logy no Atelier

Date: April 10th

Studio: Studio Gokumi

Genre: Fantasy

MAL / PV

Episodes: TBA

Staff: Iwasaki, Yoshiaki

This world has gone through many Dusks, and is slowly nearing its end. Within this world, in the western reaches of the “Land of Dusk,” there was a nation that prospered thanks to its use of alchemy.¬†There, in order to survive the eventual arrival of the “Dusk End,” the people devoted their efforts to rediscover and recreate lost alchemic technologies. Rediscovered technology from the past era was gathered in the alchemy research city known as “Central,” where research was conducted on how to halt the advance of the twilight.¬†
One of the heroes is a young man who researched alchemy in Central, the other a girl living in a small town on the frontier. This girl’s name is Escha. In the process of using her knowledge of ancient alchemy to help others, she was assigned to the Development Department. The young man’s name is Logy. Having learned the newest alchemic techniques in Central, he requested a transfer to this understaffed town to make use of his abilities, and meets Escha when he is assigned to the Development Department as well. The two make a promise to use their alchemy together, and bring success to the Development Department.

I am not interested in the plot so this show will get the standard get me hooked in three episodes or dropped. Director is from love hina so I’m a little surprised that the comedy or romance genre not tagged to the series yet.

Expectation Level: 2/10

Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu Ka?

Date: April 10th

Studio: White Fox

Genre: Comedy/ Slice of Life

MAL/ PV

Episodes: TBA

Cocoa arrives at the cafe Rabbit House one day, excited for rabbits. She actually all but lives in that cafe. She meets lots of different girls there, including a tiny and cool girl named Chino, a tough and soldier-esque girl named Lize, a spacey and quintessentially Japanese girl named Chiyo, and the ordinary but dignified Sharo.

Comedy slice of life about Rabbits? Could be an interesting slice of life from White Fox. Guessing most people will not check this out so that draws me to it. I hope that it is better than Soniani.

Expectation Level: 4/10

Ping Pong: The Animation

Date: April 11th

Studio: Aniplex

Genre: Sports

MAL

Episodes: 11

Makoto Tsukimoto (nicknamed Smile) is a quiet high-schooler who’s been friends with the loud and energetic Yukata Hoshino (nicknamed Peco) since childhood. They’re both in the local table tennis club and both have a natural talent for it, although Smile’s personality always enables him from winning against Peco. The club teacher, however, notices Smile’s talent and tries to make him gain some sportive tenacity.

Out of all the sport series that start this spring, I’m least excited about Ping pong. Mostly because of the animation style they have chosen to use. It is different but I know I’m going to get tired of watching it.

Expectation Level: 4/10

Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin

Date: April 11th

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Supernatural

MAL / PV

Episodes:11

Staff: Kamei, Kanta, Hanazawa, Kana, Ono, Yuuki

The story centers around the treasure of Nanana, a ghost who was once a beautiful but NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) girl.
A boy named Juugo was disowned by his father and forced to transfer to a high school on the “Special Student Zone,” an artificial island. With only 40,000 yen a month to live on, Juugo chooses a low-rent apartment that happens to be haunted by Nanana. Juugo and members of the school’s adventure club join a “treasure hunt royale” on the island for the Nanana Collection, a treasure that possesses a mysterious power.

Story seems good to me, different but not confusing to follow. Main reason I’m going to watch the series is because of the cast. Two of my favorite actors (Ono, Yuuki & Hanazawa, Kana) is a huge plus for me.

Expectation Level: 8/10

Date A Live 2

Date: April 12th

Studio: AIC Plus

Genre: Comedy, Mecha, Romance

MAL / PV

Episodes: 10

Second Season of Date A Live.

Date A live was one of those shows that I watched the first two episodes then put it on hold. Mostly because it was so far out there, I’ll have to finish the first season before I can fairly look at the second season.

Expectation Level: 0/10 (Not watching)

Sidonia no Kishi

Date: April 11th

Studio: Polygon Pictures

Genre: Mecha, Action, Fantasy

MAL/ PV

Episodes: TBA

It’s been a thousand years since the Gauna, a strange alien race with no known method of communication, destroyed the solar system. A portion of humanity managed to escape using enormous “seed ships” like the Sidonia, which have allowed them to maintain the population while drifting through space. Nagate Tanikaze is a young man who has been raised deep in the bowels of the ship. When he goes into training to pilot the huge robotic weapons known as Gardes, Nagate is entrusted with piloting the legendary unit known as Tsugumori. Nagate and his fellow pilots put their lives on the line against the Gauna, in the ultimate battle for the survival of humanity!

Sidonia could be the dark mecha I’ve been waiting for these past few years. Story is a little weak and is too straightforward. I’ll be happy if it focuses on background and depth on one theme compared to Valvrave which was a mile long and an inch deep.

Expectation Level: 7/10

Mekaku City Actors

Date: April 13th

Studio: Shaft (Nisekoi)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

MAL/ PV

Episodes: 11

Shintaro Kisaragi, a HikiNEET who shut himself inside his room for 2 years, had been living his life normally until he met a cyber girl named Ene, who appeared in his computer screen when someone anonymously sent him a mysterious e-mail one year ago. One day, Ene messes with Shintaro’s PC which causes him to go outside for the first time in two years.¬†For once, I am happy that Shaft is animating this series. They will bring an interesting twist to the story¬†and make it more enjoyable than it would be otherwise. Plus Comedy/Romance is what I think of for shaft series.

Expectation Level: 5/10

M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane

Date: April 22nd

Studio: Satelight

Genre: Mecha, Action

MAL / PV

Episodes: TBA

There is distorted, deep blackness everywhere. That place, in which blackness swallowed everything and took away everything, has become known as the Avidya Zone. Strange beings assume the very form of the despair and chaos of humanity. They are known by this name: Imashime.
An expedition surveys the Avidya Zone which consumes human spirits. So, in the intricate intersection between the present in impending crisis and the destiny of the past … can eight boys and girls, assembled to confront the Imashime, find the bright future that lies before the Avidya Zone?

Can’t wait for M3 to start! I am highly looking forward to this mecha over all the others. Junichi Sato and Mari Okada working together are gold in my eyes. Never know what twists are going to be in the story when Mari is in control of the script. May’n doing the opening song is a nice touch too.

Expectation Level: 10/10

Hanamonogatari

Date: May 31st

Studio: Shaft

Sixth part in the Monogatari series line.

Haven’t seen most of the monogatari series so I won’t be watching this.
