Winter 2014 is over and now we can hopefully look forward to warm weather! Sadly where I live it’s still in the 40s and but not for much longer! I’m ready for green grass and flowers over the snow and ice. Remember next week I’ll have a new format for the ratings, old format will still be around but won’t be talking about the MAL taste of anime much.
Only shows not done yet are two cour or Saki because it got pushed back by the Japan elections. Everything else is done and seems to stabilize a bit in the rankings. Did have four big jumps in the rankings though. Hoozuki, Buddy Complex, and Pupipo! all jumped at least 500 placements. Z/X Ignition also jumped a good amount but the show is more in the middle of the rankings on MAL so it’s a little easier to move about. On the Fall two cours we have Nagi no Asukara making the top 100 list with Kill la Kill. Even Gundam Build Fighters jumping into the top 500 list.
Even have some extra graphs for us to look at for the final. Both graphs show the same type of data, it’s the growth of a series over the course of the 13 week season. Positive number would mean that the series got “worst” in the eyes of MAL raters compared to the first week of the season. This is only one of many ways you can analysis the data. I also took the season’s average and median % change. Average was 7.14% for the season and -4.96% on the Median. Median would show that more shows had a “better” rating by week 13 of the season. Average is positive because I kept outliers in my data which are pulling the data positive or worst in the case of the anime show.
Do know that normally the winter season is known to be the weakest of the year for anime series but since this is my first time doing this I have nothing to compare too. I want to say that having a negative median is a good sign for the season and anime in general. Shows that series more than not are better than we first thought aka First Impressions. Hopefully after some seasons I’ll have more results to compare to each other and learn a little more about the general anime watchers.
*Edit* Okay the outliers thing was bugging me so I went back in the data and found the outliers for the season to take them out. Outliers for us would be series that did way better or worst than we(MAL raters) thought. Low outliers are: Nagi no Asukara, Kill la Kill, and Hoozuki no Reitetsu. High outliers are: Hamatora the Animation, Wizard Barristers, Sakura Trick, Chuunibyou demo, and Mahou Sensou. You could in a way say that the high outliers were over valued shows and the low outliers were undervalued. After outliers are out the average is -11.50% and the median of -6.05%. Values much closer together so I’m happy. Maybe next season we’ll have even a lower % but not going to be easy with 4 shows in the top 100 and it’s not even a week into the season yet. Please remember that the analysis still has errors in it. Some would be that I don’t have the data for the first cour of the fall continues and I didn’t have every single show that aired this winter in my data list. If I did have that data we could see different numbers but I’m hoping that with taking out the outliers should have helped for a lot of the errors. You can see the data Here.
Exciting times! A busy next two weeks for bloggers and for anime in general. Winter season shows are about 60% completed with the last 40% finishing up this coming week. Have spring shows starting on Sunday so you can look forward to them and my last-minute previews of them. I’ll be doing group first impressions like a did for the winter, even have my top lists for the ending winter season up in the next week or two. I’ll add a new page so you all can easily find them down the road. 🙂
For next season I’m changing how I’ll be doing the weekly ratings, I’ll use a moving list to rate the episodes each week. If you have ever read Angryjellyfish’s blog he uses something like this which I enjoy a lot as a reader. I’ll still have the ratings like I did this season but I’ll just add a Hyperlink at the bottom of the post(s) that will link you to the excel file if you want to see MAL ratings week to week. On the topic of episodics I’ll add one at the start of the season so we don’t just have Nisekoi for a while. Not 100% sure yet but I’m thinking Black_Bullet or Captain Earth then I’ll pick up M3 when it starts 4/21.
Well been an okay season overall I think, not the best winter season but better than most of the winter seasons. Seems that winter anime seasons are the weakest out of all the seasons. Not really surprised that Chuunibyou demo dropped 450ish places in the ratings from what I heard in the blogging world and from people watching the show. The 200 rise in the ratings of D-Frag was a nice surprise. Really didn’t think the last episode was that good but the show had a good presence all season. Hamatora which I haven’t posted about yet but didn’t do good at all for its last episode. Almost as bad as the Mahou Sensou ending, the show dropped a crazy 1300 places in the ratings. Biggest drop or rise of the season in one week.
Did have a good number of nice solid endings though, Pupipo which was haven’t problems in the middle of the season ended as best it could. Underrated Wake up girls ended strong I feel and I’d be okay with seeing more of that show. Space dandy ended just as random as it started but I’m looking forward to the second season that is coming. Kill la kill was the big mover for the fall continues which makes sense base on the crazy number of people watching it.
This week should be an easy week since most shows not airing as we wait for everything to end.
Only two more weeks left! Everything should move more than it has in the last three weeks. Even this week had some big movers randomly like Witch Craft Works and Saikin, Imouto. Imouto’s last episode was uploaded a little early so people put in their final score votes into the mix which pushed the shows rating down 700 places.
Noragami only has one episode left and it made into the top 200! Glad it made it, it’s a great show. Sadly no word on a season two yet, but Log Horizon and Space Dandy got the green light for second seasons. Other shows that did well in the rankings this week were Buddy Complex and Hoozuki. Buddy complex just a solid mecha that isn’t doing anything special but its enjoyable.
Surprisingly Chuunibyuo demo and Toaru Hikuushi moving up the in the ranking and not down after a pretty good week. Of course Pupa and Mahou sensou still doing bad.
Feel this week was very good for the more serious anime titles of the season. Hmm maybe drama base shows would be better. Golden Time, Nagi no Asukara, Noragami, and Saki all felt good to me. Golden Time really stood out with either a love or hate feel to the series now. If your into romantic/drama titles than you should check it out.
All the comedies this week wasn’t very good or in my opinion, even though they did well in the rankings this week. Best and Worst movers the same from last week: Hoozuki and Mahou Sensou respectfully.
The one series I didn’t watch that I’m thinking about starting soon is Magi. Watched some of the first season but never finished it. With the third season green-lighted I’m thinking I should catch up on it. Maybe I can get that watched over the spring season.
Found out this week that my default settings on the wordpress reader got changed somehow and wasn’t getting emails for new posts on my follows. So I spent a good part of friday changing all my follows to email on post since I read more on the move than I do sitting around at the computer. Though I do think its silly that wordpress default now isn’t email on new post, I know I never really check my reader page. Blogs don’t need a news feed like on facebook. If someone is going to read your post they going to go right to your page or through email.
With only a few more weeks left of the winter season I’ve been thinking about the site and layout a bit. Next season I’ll more likely will only do two full episodics so I can make time for editorials and other types of posts. I’m going to change the weekly ratings for next season. Not sure what I’m going to change it to yet, just know I’m not really happy with the current weekly ratings posts. At the moment they too random and don’t really cover much but trends of the public. Maybe I’ll move the tracking of the rating into a different page and every week do a week recap for the weekly post. Recap not the right word I’m looking for though, more of a moving list of what I’m watching week to week.
Lastly I’ll be changing some of the pictures on the site to more of an anime focus look, still working on a new banner for the home page but that is a very slow-moving project. For you all that like looking at screenshots I’ll be adding everything into a picture gallery so you don’t have to jump around posts for the screenshots.
Now for the ratings! The top 9 shows this season either moving down or not changing. With only three or four more episodes left for everyone is starting to wrap-up story arcs and that should push most ratings down unless they do a poor job. Best movers this week were the comedies like D-Frag! and Hoozuki. Think Log Horizon and Golden Time going to have endings that didn’t really see coming on the ratings. Log Horizon seems to be rushing to finish its current arc. Its been a good ride but I don’t see a second season on the Horizon. Golden Time….. its been up and down the whole season but should be able to end peacefully. Last light novel came out just a few days ago so not sure if the anime will have an anime only ending or if its going to follow the light novel. Need to get my hands on a copy of the light novel to find out for sure.
Nothing really stood out this week as the omg did you watch this week’s blank?! So I’m going with Kingdom for the week. It’s a show I haven’t talked about any since it started its second season in the summer season. It’s about a young man trying to become the greatest general in the world. Story follows ancient china history pretty well. If you like shounen anime or dynasty warriors you will more likely enjoy the show. Good character development with history has kept me around for two seasons and looking forward to a third. Recommend you check it out.
News: I’ll group the Hamatora episode with next week again since I’m dropping the ball this week for some reason.
Good week or I enjoyed most of what I saw this week. On the fence to what was the best episode of the week. Buddy Complex was a straight forward standard mecha episode. Got some of the walls breaking down on Hina’s side. Noragami and Toaru Hikuushi had some great episodes.
Even looking at the rankings for the week, most of the top half of the winter shows went up in rankings. Space Dandy, Seki-kun, D-Frag! and Mikakunin went up with enjoyable episodes this week. I’m not really liking Mikakunin now but I’ll finish it more likely. Hoozuki moved the best, don’t even really understand it. Its episode wasn’t that funny to me but on par compared the other episodes. Even Tokyo Ravens and Strike the blood were fun to watch, which are hit and miss for me.
Noone really dropped in ranking that much this week. Some movement in the higher ranks but its small. Biggest drops were on Wizards, Wake up Girls, and Mahou sensou.
Even with a surprise ending in Hamatora and the action picking up, both Hamatora and Toaru Hikuushi slide back in the rankings. While Space Dandy and D-Frag doing the same mindless episodes and move up the ladder. I’ll never understand mal ratings by people.
Hoozuki is really funny or I’m enjoying the show a lot. It’s this week’s best mover by moving 168 places. Worst on the ratings this week was Mahou Sensou, gaining 300 places. The shorts haven’t been that good this winter, we have Seki-kun which is good but then everything else is so so or very bad. Pupa btw is still falling to the bottom.
Random facts for the season so far: Saki: Zenkoku-Hen is the least watched show and Noragami is the most watched. Biggest mover as in positive is Hoozuki no Reitetsu. Week 1 it was 3868 and now its 2450, on track to break 2k by week 11 based on this pace. Worst mover in placement isn’t pupa (that was bad from the start), but it’s not really a shocker as it is Mahou Sensou. Madhouse doesn’t always make winners.
Week over finally! I’ve been pretty busy the last four or five days. Really has delayed my watching overall and my Hamatora post. Think I ended up watching most of the week’s shows yesterday in a five hour sitting. Outside of the airing episodes I’ve started watching Baccano, which is very good. No its damn good.
Watching like forty airing shows a week has its up and downs. One of the ups is it makes it easy to recommend shows to my friends that don’t have the time or patience to look for the diamonds in the rough. The worst down is watching shows just seeing disappointments in shows that had good outlines. There’s three airing shows like that for me this season. We do have six weeks for them to turn it around, though I’m not that hopeful. The three are:
1. Mahou Sensou
2. Nobunaga the Fool
3. Mikakunin de Shinkoukei
I’ll more likely touch on them at the end of season, for now I’d recommend staying away from them based on my taste. Mahou sensou just happens to also be the worst mover this week. Nobunagun and Wizards also didn’t have a very good week as they dropped at least 100 ranks. Hoozuki did the best this week with D-Frag, Nisekoi, and Mikakunin also doing well.
Season nearly half way through, doesn’t seem that all ago when we watched the bad first episode of Buddy Complex. Now its shaping up to be a solid mecha without too much twist to it.
Okay, am I one of the only ones really disliking that Kobeni from Mikakunin de Shinkoukei is getting married to a dog boy? The whole show now just seems silly, before I could somewhat go with it and they where making good character development too. urgh, very upsetting to me that we have InuYasha randomly in the show.
On the positive Noragami had a great episode this week and I’m getting into the flow of Space Dandy. Its style is very good for a weekly show and makes it easy to jump in. Think of Hoozuki no Reitetsu too when thinking of Space Dandy, free-flowing comedies that are there to be enjoyed.
Looking at the ranking this week, the mal ratings just loving Space Dandy this week. Up over 200 places from last week. Madhouse’s Mahou Sensou dropped almost 400 places this week. It had a weak episode but still a pretty big drop imo. Really never understand some of the mal ratings, like Tokyo Ravens being higher ranked compared to Strike the Blood.
Saki:Zenkoku should pick up in ratings the next few weeks with we getting the more enjoyable matches. Even seeing Nobunagun getting better in the coming weeks.
Not much change overall but good jumps for a few animes. Noragami had a good jump of 56 places to almost overthrow Nisekoi in rankings. More likely do to the fact of seeing Yato’s dark past of being a god of war. Hoozuki had good rankings, the humor is coming across well and I think its very funny to watch. Toaru Hikuushi ended on a big twist this week and the story gives you no bullshit as it goes along. Very enjoyable.
Wizard Barristers had one of the biggest drops this week and don’t really see anything to bad with it. Sure the law is very badly done but the action scenes are well done and have a good flare to them. Go go 575 ended as a short and just don’t watch it. Not much there at all. Madhouse not doing well with mahou sensou in the ratings, show is lacking emotion or something.
I know I missed the episode recap of Hamatora the Animation this week. I’ll cover it next week with the new episode since nothing happened in this weeks’ episode. I’ll have Nisekoi out later today. I’ll start matching the picture for the ratings with my best episode of the week. Make it easier on those who only want the overview in a blink of an eye. 🙂
